Aberdeen Bowling Club update August 2021

Dear Members

I hope this newsletter update finds you safe and well. Our bowling season is now nearing the final weeks with the closing of the green scheduled for the 18th September. Although we have continued to operate adhering to Covid guidance and Track and Trace legislation we have enjoyed seeing our members enjoying the out of doors and coming together to meet friends and enjoy a game of bowls.
The committee has continued to meet throughout the season and have been thinking of ways in which to encourage members to come along and support their club.

There has been a tremendous amount of work carried out at the green to enhance the environment and improve our facilities. Our new shed looks amazing and is now awaiting a coat of paint. The ditches are looking great with the new stones. The masonary work is looking good and the hedges are benefitting from a trim. We would welcome any help with general gardening duties in and around the green such as weeding, sweeping, trimming of foliage etc if you up at the green.

We have managed to run some of or club competitions this season.   As usual all information was posted on our noticeboards.  The Friday triples were played with three teams participating.  Unfortunately none of the teams made the finals this year but we had some great matches which were much enjoyed by all participating players.  Although we did struggle for team players due to injury we all did our best.  The ladies singles and pairs have gone ahead.  The finals will be played at a date to be confirmed shortly.

The ladies participated in the Scott Simpson triples and pairs.

Susan Martin and Val Souter with Bowling trophy.
Susan Martin and Val Souter

Although we did not fair too well in the triples our congratulations go to Susan Martin and Val Souter who played extremely well and won the Pairs Competition. Well done girls!!
Karen Cable played the Champion of Champions and managed to successfully get through to the semi-finals where she was outbowled by Kim Watt at Polmuir on Saturday 14th August.

There have been various friendly matches scheduled with the usual information being posted on the notice boards within the club. Unfortunately we have had to cancel many of these games due to lack of players but thoroughly enjoyed matches with Aberdon and Whitehall. We have opened the Carlton trophy to all members this year and it will be held on Saturday 28th and Sunday the 29th August. The Saturday games will begin at 1.00pm. We have decided to have fish and chips following the competition and warmly invite all members to come along for fish and chips and some refreshments at around 4.30 pm. Hopefully this will give members a chance to catch up and enjoy some social interaction with friends. The cost for this will be £6.00. Please let us know if you would like to attend the fish and chip supper by replying to this e-mail or come along and sign up on the club noticeboard with your orders. It would be lovely to see as many of our members as possible at this event.
We hope to have the semi-final and the final of the Carlton Trophy on the Sunday morning.

We are hoping to have an afternoon of bowls accompanied by a raffle and a cheese and wine at the closing of the green on Saturday 18th September. Final arrangements will be e-mailed out as soon as they are finalised but pencil this event in your diary as we would love to see as many of our members as possible.

We are continuing with the Thursday afternoon hats and have been delighted with the turn out recently. It has been lovely to see some of our members just coming along for a coffee and a chat and playing half a game or just spectating.

Norman has booked the indoor for some winter games so that we can keep in touch over the winter season. There will be sign up sheets on the club noticeboard or just reply to this e-mail to note interest.
Dates are as follows:-
Sunday 17th October – we require at least 3 rinks – Cost £15.50 for bowling and meal – 4.00pm start
Sunday 7th November – Aberdon game we requre 4 rinks – 2.00pm start followed by meal £15.50
Sunday 20th March – Cost £15.50 bowling and meal 4.00pm start

It is not necessary to be a member of the indoor bowling club to attend these games so please put your name down and come along so that we can keep in touch over the winter!

We would like to run some winter activities at the club – perhaps a few bingo sessions or whist afternoons. If you would be interested in attending some of these events please let us know what kind of activity you would attend so that we can arrange a few sessions and let you know well in advance. If you let us know by either signing up at the club or replying to this e-mail that would be great!

We would also like to arrange a Christmas lunch at either the Cricket Club or the Atholl Hotel. If you would be interested in attending this please let us know.

In the meantime please come along to our Thursday afternoon hats (weather permitting).

Kindest regards,

Presidents Val and Karen
and the Committee of Aberdeen Bowling Club
