Aberdeen Bowling Club – Update September 2022

September  2022

Dear Members

As we draw closer to the end of our bowling season we hope that all our members are well and still enjoying a game of bowls.  The weather has taken a change in the last few days but hopefully some of you have managed to make the most of the end of season bowling between showers.

Our members have been very busy out and about representing our club at various competitions and events around Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Congratulations to all our members who have participated in other club events and hopefully gained valuable experience playing further afield.  The IAT trip to Cardonald was a great experience and although Aberdeen didn’t win the team did themselves proud and came home with a medal!

We had our last friendly fixture against Culter Bowling Club on the 13 August – the weather was great and it was a most enjoyable day.

We had a very successful club barbecue on the 20 August.  It was lovely to have the green full and have so many of our members turn up to enjoy the hat, watch the bowling, meet up with friends and enjoy the camaraderie.  Our thanks go to the chefs – Andrew, Alison and Nick and the committee members who were behind the organisation of this event.

Nearly all the club finals have been played now:- Congratulations to the competition winners:-

Gents Singles – Aaron Hunter

Ladies Singles – Moira Keay

Ladies Pairs – Susan Martin and Winnie Bingham

Handicap Singles – Aaron Hunter

Mixed Fours – Norman Brown, Fiona Wilkie, Nick Youngson Gordon Davidson

Florence Pirie Quaich – Doreen Adie, Moira Keay

We still have a couple of finals to be played – the Mixed Pairs and the Gents Senior Singles. Well done to all our players who reached the finals this season.

We are looking forward to the Champion of Champions this Saturday 10 September followed by Cheese and Wine.  We hope to begin the match at 2.00pm followed by cheese and wine after the match. We invite all our members to come along and support Moira and Aaron as they battle it out for the Club Championship!

Congratulations to our Green Keeper Stuart Middleton who has secured a new job as Green Keeper at St Andrews Golf Club.  This will however leave us without someone to cut our grass next season.  We have discussed our members creating a green committee to do this as Stuart has offered to continue to help us with the treatment and preparation of our green.  We would be interested to hear from members who will be willing to cut the grass on a rota.  Stuart will give us a workshop to enable us to do this correctly.  A notice will go up at the club so sign up if you will be willing to help out.  We have also negotiated with Stuart to keep our green playing until the end of September.

Our official Closing of the Green and prize giving will take place on Saturday 17 September. There will be a hat afternoon beginning at 2.00pm followed by the official closing of the green. Afterwards there will be tea and prize giving.  We hope for good weather and a great turn out!

We have a few dates for your diary.  Norman has booked indoor games at Summerhill Indoor Bowling Club for Sunday 16 October and Sunday 19 March.  There are sign up sheets in the club for these games.  We also have and indoor game against Aberdon on Sunday 6 November. Please put your name down for these games as it is great to keep in touch with fellow bowlers over the winter months.  You do not need to be a member of the indoor to join in these events.

We also have made a booking at the Atholl Hotel for our Christmas Lunch on Saturday 10 December at 1.00pm.  You will find the menu attached.  The cost for three courses and coffee will be £35.  Guests are welcome for this event.  Please sign up at the club or let us know by email if you would like to attend. We had lots of fun and games at last years Christmas meal.

We hope to have a few events throughout the winter but we will keep you informed.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.

Kind regards

Presidents Karen and Val

and the Committee of Aberdeen Bowling Club
