Aberdeen Bowling Club Update - September 2026
Dear Members,
I write to you with sad news that one of our former and most esteemed members of Aberdeen Bowling club passed away last week. Mrs Florence Pirie (mother of Alison Pirie) passed away peacefully last Wednesday 26 August at Woodlands Care Home. Florence was a great bowler and was one of the first members of Carlton Ladies Bowling. She represented the club at Ayr in the National Championships on several occasions. She was most supportive of the club and enjoyed meeting up with her many friends to enjoy a game of bowls. She presented the Florence Pirie Quiche for the ladies’ competition to ensure her legacy on the bowling green continued to the next generation of bowlers. Florence always had a smile on her face and a kind word for her fellow bowlers, and she always encouraged new players giving them coaching and useful tips. She was an active member of the committee and was match secretary. Her name is on our honours board, and she will be remembered fondly for her contributions to the club.
Her funeral will be at Hazlehead Crematorium East Chapel on Wednesday 9 September at 3.30pm.
Our thoughts are with Alison and her family at this sad time.
The men’s singles were played on Sunday at 4.00pm. It was a very good match between Craig Pike and Neil Murray. After a good start, Craig edged ahead, but Neil wasn’t put off and fought back but didn’t quite manage to make up the shots. Congratulations to Craig who won the match.
Congratulations to Moira Keay who managed a victory in the Ladies Consolation Cup against Elaine Moore. It was again a great match to watch and was played in great spirit.
Steve Smith won the senior singles against Neil Murray. It was a close match but our congratulations to Steve who managed to pip Neil to the post.
The ladies singles were played on finals day. Karen had a very good start against Jane, but Jane crept back up, and it got very exciting as she pulled ahead. Karen just managed a couple of good ends to secure the victory, but it was a close match with some excellent bowls played by both players.
The men’s pairs were also played on finals day with Steve Smith and Gary Green against Brian Adie and Dave Hunter. It was a very close match as it was peals going into the last end. Congratulations to Steve and Gary who managed to get the last shot to secure a victory.
Congratulations to Karen who has managed to reach the finals of the ALDBA Champion of Champions and will play against Anne Davidson on finals day at Newhills Bowling Club on Sunday 6 September.
The quiz night on Saturday was very successful. Thanks to Steve and David, our quizmasters, for a fun and challenging quiz. There was a super turn out and a great evening was had by all. Many thanks to all who organised this event.
The menu and the sign-up sheet are now at the club for the festive Centenary Dinner, so please sign up ASAP as numbers are restricted to 50 guests.
Kind regards
President Karen and members of the ABC Committee
